The beauty of bespoke: personalising your engagement ring in London

The beauty of bespoke: personalising your engagement ring in London

Most people don’t begin their bespoke engagement ring journey with a fully formed vision. Faced with a completely blank page, the freedom of bespoke can feel as daunting as it is exciting. With so many possibilities, where do you begin?

Designing a custom made engagement ring

Start by browsing. Pinterest, Instagram, and online archives are invaluable for gathering ideas, not to replicate, but to understand what genuinely resonates with you. Collect references, save designs and note the details that catch your eye, whether it’s a particular stone shape, a delicate band, a sculptural basket or a mixed metal palette. These early impressions help your London bespoke jeweller understand your preferences and guide you through the creative design process.

It’s also worth noting that custom and personalised engagement rings naturally sit within a wider price range than ready made pieces. This is because time, artistry and technical expertise go into crafting a ring that exists nowhere else. Instead of purchasing something off the shelf, you are commissioning a future heirloom.

With your inspiration in place, the focus shifts to the details that speak to you and your partner’s style and story.

Ways to personalise your bespoke engagement ring

1. Engravings: quiet details cast in gold

Engravings are one of the most intimate ways to personalise a ring. They’re discreet, timeless and deeply sentimental. Some of the most popular engraving ideas include: a significant date, your initials, a short phrase or vow or even a fingerprint.

Set inside the band, engravings are only known to the wearer, a personal message held close to the skin.

2. Personalised birthstones: an intentional touch of colour

Incorporating a birthstone is a beautiful way to add symbolism without competing with the centre diamond. A small gemstone can be set inside the band, placed on the gallery rail, nestled beside the centre stone or integrated within the basket.

A lovely example from our collection is The Classic Wedding Ring and the Flow of Us Ring, designed by and for Alice, one of Incador’s founders, and her husband. Jamie’s traditional band features two discreet birthstones set into the gold, while Alice’s ring takes a more maximalist approach with a full pavé of alexandrite, peridot and diamonds.  Together, they show just how versatile and personal birthstone details can be in bespoke handmade design.

3. Decorative baskets: sculptural silhouettes behind the stone

One of the most often overlooked ways to personalise a ring is through the basket setting. The basket is the metalwork that holds your centre stone and at Incador, it’s a place where Alice and Karen’s creativity meets your narrative.

In this custom engagement ring, the peony inspired basket takes its cues directly from the client’s favourite flower, echoing the soft, organic curves of a blooming flower. It’s sculptural, romantic and instantly recognisable. While the top view of this ring may appear classic and timeless, the side profile reveals a piece of miniature architecture, a hidden world of detail meant just for you and your fiancée.

4. Mixed metals: a contemporary signature

Mixed metals are becoming increasingly popular for bespoke engagement rings in London, especially among clients who want something modern yet understated. Combining different metal tones can reflect the wearer’s personal style while highlighting the centre stone and adding depth and contrast.

From a craftsmanship perspective, mixing metals is a precise and intentional process which introduces character without overwhelming the ring. Melissa Tattam’s ring is a perfect example, a harmonious blend of platinum for the basket and yellow gold for the ring band, creating a look that feels both contemporary and timeless.

5. Recycled gold: ethical luxury without compromise

This is where Incador stands apart. We are the only fine jewellery brand in London whose entire collection, including every bespoke diamond engagement ring, is crafted entirely from recycled gold extracted from electronics.

Through our partnership with the GEIF Foundation, Incador’s annual donations help provide electronic devices to BECA scholarship students. In doing so, we’re closing the loop by supporting access to electronics today, while repurposing the precious materials they contain through responsible recycling. This commitment is part of our broader dedication to creating real and positive impact within artisanal mining communities.

Our gold has a fully traceable provenance, documented through our jewellery provenance passports, which follows your ring from extraction to final polish. It’s a level of transparency rarely seen in fine jewellery. Choosing recycled gold doesn’t just make your ring more sustainable, it makes it more meaningful. Your ring has a story and it’s one you can share with pride.

How long does a bespoke engagement ring take to make?

A made to order engagement ring typically takes 6 to 8 weeks from consultation to completion. This timeframe includes design development, stone sourcing, casting, hand finishing and of course, quality checks. If you’re planning a proposal, it’s best to begin the process early so you can enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. Some couples start the design journey a year before the proposal, while others begin just a couple of months ahead.

What if I don’t know my partner’s ring size?

This is one of the most common concerns, and the good news is that you don’t need to know her exact ring size to begin the process. Most engagement rings can be resized, even those with diamonds on the band, depending on the design. We can work from an average ring size and resize it to fit her perfectly once you’ve proposed.  There are also a few discreet ways to get closer to her ring size. During your bespoke engagement ring consultation in London, we’ll guide you through all of this and help you get as close to her ring size as possible.
